Blake Poetry Prize 2008

Entries by 27 June 2008 - A new national poetry prize , the Blake Poetry Prize 2008 , is calling for entries 'bliss, blasphemy and belief'. It is sponsored by the NSW Writers' Centre , the Blake Society and the Leichhardt Municipal Council. The Blake Society awards the annual Blake Prize for Religious Art . This initiative links visual art and literature, and offers new possibilities for poets to explore the nature of spirituality in the twenty-first century. Australian literary magazine Wet Ink will provide judges for the competition and publish the winner.

Margaret Reid Prize for Traditional Verse

The $5,250 Margaret Reid Prize for Traditional Verse will close at midnight, June 30. However, the $5,250.

Here is a quick rundown of the rules for the Margaret Reid Prize:
Total prize money of $5,250 includes a First Prize of $2,000, a Second Prize of $1,000 and a Third Prize of $500. There are 14 cash prizes in all.
Entry fee is $6 for every 25 lines (or part thereof). THERE IS NO LINE LIMIT. 
THERE ARE ALSO NO LIMITS ON THE NUMBER OF POEMS YOU MAY SUBMIT.
We will accept both unpublished verse and published verse (so long as you are able to give us permission to publish your winning poem on the Winning Writers website). Free print publication will also be available in our next printed anthology, but winners are not obliged to accept this offer.

Tom Howard Contest for Poetry in All Styles and Genres

Tom Howard Contest for Poetry in All Styles and Genres will remain open until September 30. 

All prize-winners of both the current Margaret Reid Poetry Prize for Traditional Verse and the current Tom Howard Poetry Contest for Verse in All Styles and Genres, will be offered traditional print publication in a book of similar size and quality to SAILING IN THE MIST OF TIME. 
If you wish to check out 'Sailing in the Mist of Time', this beautifully printed, large format book which usually retails for $16.50, is still being vigorously promoted at Amazon and other stores for only $9.95.

OVERLAND MAGAZINE JUDITH WRIGHT POETRY PRIZE for NEW and EMERGING POETS 2008

Overland , the most radical of Australia's literary journals, invites entries to the annual Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize, open to all poets who have not yet had a collection of their work commercially published (that is, by a publishing house with commercial distribution).

A maximum of three unpublished poems is allowed per entrant. Overland 's poetry editor, Keri Glastonbury, will award a major prize of $3000 with two minor prizes of $500. The winning poem will be published in Overland .

Arts Queensland Poetry Awards

Entries have opened for the 2008 Arts Queensland Poetry Awards, administered by Queensland Writers Centre in conjunction with Queensland Poetry Festival.

The Arts Queensland Val Vallis Award for Unpublished Poetry

Named in honour of a distinguished Queensland poet, The Arts Queensland Val Vallis Award for Unpublished Poetry is committed to encouraging emerging poets throughout Australia. Celebrating its 10th year, this prestigious prize for an unpublished poem (or suite of poems) of 100 lines or less comes with a first prize of $3,000 . Second and third prizes are $750 and $250 respectively, and winners will be announced at the opening of the Queensland Poetry Festival on 22 August. Entries close Monday 7 July, 2008. The Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize

The Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize, now in its 6th year, is committed to encouraging emerging Queensland poets. This prestigious prize for an unpublished poetry manuscript awards $3,000 plus a publishing contract with UQP. The winner will be announced at the opening of the Queensland Poetry Festival on 22 August. Entries close Monday 14 July, 2008. Poetry in traditional verse forms. Your entry should be your own original work. You may submit the same poem simultaneously to this contest and to others, and you may submit poems that have been published or won prizes elsewhere, as long as you own the online publication rights.

ATTENTION WRITERS OF BUSH VERSE!

The 2008 Blackened Billy Verse Competition will be opening  on  September 1st.

This competition has been running for about 17 years and has gained  the reputation as one of the most prestigious competitions in  Australia .  The Blackened Billy trophy has been much prized by  previous winners and keenly sought after and there are cash prizes as  well.

Bush poetry is a traditional type of verse written with rhyme and  rhythm that reflects the Australian way of life, and themes for poems  entered in the past have ranged from the old droving days to the  problems and experiences of modern living, both in the city and the  country.

The Tamworth Poetry Reading Group, which runs this competition,  welcomes entries from new and old writers.  For an entry form and  information, please write to Jan Morris, PO Box 3001, West Tamworth   2340 or email janmorris@northnet.com.au  Entry forms will be  available from September 1 and entries close November 30.  Winners  are announced during the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January.


Entries are now invited for the
Max Harris Poetry Award 2008

Offering a prize of $3,000 for the winning poem, this national award recognises the significant contribution that poets make to Australian literary culture.  
The winning entry and two unpaid commended entries will receive University of South Australia Max Harris Poetry Award Certificates, which will be presented at an award ceremony in October 2008.
The best entries will be published in the Max Harris Poetry Award poetry collection, to be released in 2009.
The entry fee is $10 for one poem and an extra $5 per poem for up to two additional poems.
The closing date for entries is 15 July 2008.
